“Day 30 - 30 Day make an iphone game challenge”

Date October 8, 2008

After a long 30 days (actually 38 days because we didn’t post when Lewis finished), Lewis has finally completed his game, and boy does it look awesome. It has great control, music, and replay value. I guess he wasn’t kidding when he said he could make a game in 30 days! Hopefully we will see it in the app store very soon and congratulations to Lewis Pugh for completing his first iPhone app! Here are the videos, Part 1 and Part 2. Enjoy!

Part 1: Talking about the Game and its Development

Part 2: Demo of the Game

Hey, congrats on getting the game done. It looks phenomenal for something that has only been done in 30 days, let alone the fact that you only started learning Cocoa Touch and Objective-C 30 days ago.

You’ve inspired me and others to go along with game development.

I will be posting about this on Touchpodium.com as well.

I don’t mean to be negative, but I find this whole challenge a little difficult to believe.

As an experienced Cocoa (and less-experienced iPhone) developer myself, I find it amazing that you can go from being a “php programmer” who is “used to working with all their code in 1 file” (your words) to having a fully-fledged iPhone game completed in only 30 days.

Lets break this down and see what you’ve done in this short timeframe:

    1. Learned how to use OS X (admittedly not that hard - but different from windows).
    2. Read both the Kochan Objective-C book and the Hillegass Cocoa book.
    3. Learned Objective-C from scratch.
    4. Learned how to use XCode (again, not that hard - but very different to any PHP IDE).
    5. Learned Cocoa-touch (including how to work with layers, views, accelerometers, touch events, the sound system, user preferences and more).
    6. Gather together animation, sound effects, graphics etc. and format them for the iPhone.
    7. QA your game to the point you had played it “100 times without a crash”.
    8. Generate and download your developer and deployment certificates and submit your app (very time-consuming).
    9. Start writing a game, then completely change direction after a couple of days and write a different game.
    10. Take “a couple of days off” (around day 18).
    11. and finally (let’s not forget this) - make these videos!

Sorry, but I call BS. The game looks awesome and I wish you well with it, but you didn’t do it in 30 days..

Hello all, thanks for following my project =)

Sceptical, thanks for taking the time for such a long post, i actually take it all as a huge compliment, everything you stated is true (of what i did in the 30 days)
The only things i did for this game out side the 30 days was:
Anime art (was from an old game called 21 days)
Soundtrack (was from 21 days too)
Even all the voice work was done in the alloted time just for this game including finding new people to do it.

Hope you enjoyed watching it if you have any questions feel free to fire them away.
